MANAGEMENT OF ARCHEOLOGICAL PARK OF LITERNUM

Scavi Liternum

Since November 2009, the Domitian Coast Pro Loco was commissioned by the Municipality of Giugliano for care, management and promotion of the Archaeological Park of Liternum. It spreads over a 85.000 square meters area at Lago Patria, a hamlet of Giugliano located in the Phlegraean coast at north of Naples and Pozzuoli. It includes remains of the ancient Roman settlement "Liternum" where you can appreciate the "Forum", the "Thermae baths", "the Temple", "the Basilica", "the Theatre" and traces of the historical "Domitiana" road, a famous highway which joined Puteoli to Rome. Historical sources say that Publius Cornelio Scipio, also known as the African, lived here with his veterans in voluntary exile, last years of his life. Scipio the African was the man who changed the history of Rome and of the countries all over the world. The Archeological Park of Liternum starts from Lago Patria village and runs down to the lake where national boat races take place. The lovely lake front with its flourishing vegetation is the ideal place for walking, cycling, horse riding, having a pic-nic and relaxing. The archeological remains are next to the Phlegraean-domitian Coast with a wide golden sand beach a rife pinewood where you can see plants of the Mediterranean vegetation. In roman age the Phlegraean pinewood was also known as the "Silva Gallinaria" (birds forest) as the roman writer Plinio Il Giovane well defined it for the reason that it was as today a place of rest for many species of migratory birds and home to several species of sedentary birds. On purpose, the Liternum organizing committee arranged a bird watching location equipped with reed and bushes areas where birds can stop for resting and nesting. Archeological and naturalistic tour guides are at visitors disposal for scientific and historical information about the site. The Phlegraean and Domitian area is plenty of hotels, boarding house, B&B and campsites open all year and restaurants were visitors can enjoy the traditional Mediterranean cooking, tasting typical food and local wines. This area also offers a choice of fully-equipped bathing beach with a guaranteed life guard service. Attractions as the "Magic world", one of the Campania's biggest and best entertainment parks, are fun for children and adults. At Liternum and at villages nearby visitors can also buy local products: wine, vegetables, fresh fruit, cheese as well the typical Mozzarella cheese. Visitors have many opportunities for interesting excursion. They can easily reach other Phlegraean Fields tourist sights such as: Baia with its Castle, the Archeological Museum and the submerged city; Cuma escavations; the wildlife of Monte Nuovo and Variconi; the peculiar town of Pozzuoli and the active Volcano of Solfatara; the city of Naples; the city of Caserta and its famous Vanvitelli palace and many other places to visit. History and nature, seaside and lakeside, mild and temperate climate all year round ensure a comfortable stay at the lovely resort of Liternum for families and young people, for students, researchers and for those who desire relax.

EVENT "BOOK AS A FRIEND"

4 - 5 - 6 June 2010 ARCHEOLOGICAL PARK OF LITERNUM

The event "Book as a friend" is the first and ambitious initiative that the Domitian Coast Pro Loco organizes in the Archaeological Park Liternum since it became manager in November 2009. The event, dedicated to young people, will take place in three days during which the public can take part at conferences related to publishing and culture with the participation of important personalities, can watch sports demonstrations in Patria's Lake, visit the park with its many and interesting archeological remains or simply stroll and relax in a natural and archeological area unique in the territory. The main objective of the Domitian Coast Pro Loco is to organize an annual event, as a moment of encounter, knowledge, discussion and engagement with young people resident in a territory, the Domitian coast, with no points of cultural aggregation: cinemas, theaters, clubs, bookstores, libraries. This comes under the primary purpose that is to implement initiatives that can contribute to make available to the public the Archeological Park of Liternum so it will becomes a big tourist and cultural attraction.
